Amma's Pudalangai Kootu

I am totally in love being a new mom...Each day maha is showing the new things which she is learning. Love seeing all those cute stuffs, it makes me so amazed. Its raining heavily here in nagercoil. Sitting on a bamboo swing with my lil Maha, near the window side, watching rain, One of my best time in my life. I just want to soak all this up
into me to the core..I don't want to miss this moment...Loving it:)

Ingredients for Pudalangai Kootu

  • Pudalagai / Snake Gourd - 1 small deseeded and chopped finely
  • Yellow Split Moong Dal - ½ cup washed
  • Salt to taste

For Grinding:

  • Coconut - ¾ cup
  • Chilli powder - 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
  • Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam - 1tsp

For Seasoning:

  • Coconut Oil - 1 tbsp
  • Mustard Seeds / Kaduku - 1 tsp

You know that kootu takes majority part in south indian cooking. It is made most time of the week along with other dishes. I have quite a few kootu recipe in this blog too. Normally kootu is made when a spicy kulambu takes part in the lunch. Since this curry is mild, it goes well with those type of kulambu. Here you go to the recipe and let me know if you try this..

How to Make Pudalangai Kootu

  1. Take washed moong dal in a sauce pan. Cover with water and bring it to a boil.
  2. Once it reaches a boil add in chopped up snake gourd and mix well.
  3. Cover with a lid and let it cook for 15 to 20 mins.
  4. Now take the grinding ingredients in a mixer and blend it to a smooth puree.
  5. Once the dal is done, add in the ground masala and mix well. Let it cook on a low heat for 5 mins.
  6. Now make seasoning by heating oil and crackling some mustard. Pour this over the kootu and mix well.
  7. Serve with rice.
