On a tip from Tony...

Lookie what I found!

IL Motorsport colored AC control face thingies! (http://www.ilmotorsport.de/show_details.php?ID=1110&sprache=en&kat=Neuheit&modell=NB&Anfang=10&count=16&begriff=&PHPSESSID=ab53c5e3c6e65ba638de9fc38b937eaa) They have them in a buncha colors, and each color each has a few lettering color options, even blue with white letters! :D Of course then you have to get the matching gauge faces. :D  Ok, I know, I get excited over little things.

Patrick, I'm still running Myata in DP with you! I won't let you down! It's gonna be fun! I just want to do a Fun Run in Tony's Miata if he's willing. I suppose I should establish a repoir (as a responsible, trustworthy driver) with him first. :D

I'll be putting on my 3-year-old Victoracers Saturday. I'm not sure what's better at this point--these rock hard race tires or the rock hard Michelin Pilot SXGT's that are on the car now! LOL! :D

HAHA. I saw those also. I don't know if I like them. I'd have to see them in person.

I'm in DP too. :)

I wouldn't exactly call Pilots rock hard. They ain't race tires, but mine seem to do pretty well.

This should be fun :D I'm gonna give my S03's a good work out...heheheh.

I also for see me getting some autocross tires soon..since Neo will be getting his 14's back.

If you choose not to, then your loss... Both Sonics are about the same distance from me, so which ever one is fine.

FYI: There is a general car meet tonight at the Sonics at University/Goldenrod. Most of the cars are pretty nice. There is usually a few SR/CA 240s, some FDs and FCs, as well as other various cars. Last week there was an STi and an EVO. Normally aspirated cars have been in the minority there. People start showing up at eight if anyone is interested.

As far as Monday, I've already had to drive out to Kissimee twice within the last couple days and may need to go out there once more soon. I just didn't feel like driving out there yet again.

Mmmmm....yummy. The only thing it would take to fit it on a 99 or 00 would be trimming out the headlight openings for the larger 99-00 lights. Fitting a 99-00 bumper on a later model is impossible without changing the headlights, but the other way around is easy. A dremel and about an hour is all you need.

Looks like the Bucs game on Sunday isn't until 4-ish. Anybody up for some post autocross football action?

Yeah, that's right, I said " post autocross ". How do you like that ? Who wants to meet up and ride out there together? Email me.

As written on the Rspeed website:
This is a new kit and exhaust system from MPS that will be available for the 2001+ Miatas. More info to be announced soon. It's a little different in the front and back, but those "TT style" fender flares, as well as the overall look of the kit remind me an awful lot of the MPS (http://www.edmunds.com/news/autoshows/articles/47030/page011.html) concept car shown last year at the Frankfurt auto show.

Neo Masamune

12th September 2003, 11:00

I'm up for some football on Sunday afternoon :) As for Autocrossing, I am not going to be able to do it, cause I'm tight for money with the Atlanta trip coming up for me really soon. I just bought some rear tires (should be in today)...some Falken Ziex 512 (advanced version of 502's, which were awesome dry tires, but crap in the wet....the 512's fix that issue.) Up front I'll still have the (stickier) Azenis for a little while, so it should make for some interesting handling characteristics.

Another reason I can't go is because I'm running out of time to get some artworks done and printable to sell when I do go to Atlanta. In all honesty, I'm probably going to give up on Autocrossing alltogether because the car can't handle it right now (needs too many repairs, etc.), and neither can my pocketbook with everything else that's important to me in my life....like my girlfriend, my artworks, etc.

So I'll see you all that afternoon, then.

Yay! My new spark plugs came in. :) Now I need more tools. I have a plug socket, but no extension. Anyone have a 3/8" socket extension I can borrow for 5 min? What about a gapping tool? Does anyone bother with this?

PAW467

12th September 2003, 14:28

Dan, I have one but you'd have to drive over to my side of town to get it... let me know... my office number is 407-297-8833

PAW467

12th September 2003, 14:33

Gapping tool.. stop by the autoparts place you can get one for like .50 cents.. I can't find mine..

Neo Masamune

12th September 2003, 15:07

Matt, you missed her this last Monday night, she did come hang out with us then. :)

Dan, you DEFINITELY want to gap all the plugs properly. Very important.

That reminds me, I need new plugs too....colder ones, so as I can stop PINGING. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

Ah, but since the weather's cooler, it hasn't pinged as much lately.

-Neo

Dream2Race

12th September 2003, 17:17

Ya know everytime I've bought plugs for the Miata, they've come coincidentally gapped to spec. Didn't have to change them. Strange eh?

Dan, what kind of plugs did you get?

Aaron, will running a colder plug really reduce pinging? Where's Ditch when ya need him!

[ 12. September 2003, 17:24: Message edited by: Dream2Race ]

Tony Orlando

12th September 2003, 19:56

Yeah, a colder plug will help reduce pinging, as will shortening the gap. I run NGK BKR6E-11's, gapped to .28. The manual calls for either 5E-11 o OR 6E-11's, (depending on climate) gapped to .42 or .44. (I can't remember which) I'd pull yours and see if they're 5's or 6's. The 6's are colder, BTW.

So, who's up for riding to Tavares together? It'd be pretty cool to get a little caravan together, wouldn't you say? :)

10AE 2344

12th September 2003, 20:01

Aaron, will running a colder plug really reduce pinging? Doubtful. I'd say just bite the bullet and do what you have to to back the timing off. Pinging is a good way to break things that aren't easy to get to. :(

Dan, what kind of plugs did you get? NGK BKR5E-11 (stock)

I found a solution, I don't need the tools after all. Thanks though.

FYI... I now know why they call them "Voodoo" knobs! They are magical! :D I got a black crinkle magnum. It's the coolest thing since sliced bread! Besides being the perfect shape, size, texture, weight, etc. it drops the knob probably 1/2". Maybe more. It feels much more joysticky now, and is lots more fun to use than the stock one. It's like getting a short shifter and a new knob all for 30 bucks! I can't even imagine using this with a short shifter. Anyone who wants to test it out is perfectly welcome. You can even try it in your own car. It comes off in about 5 seconds. I was taking it off at stoplights to test it with and without the trim ring. :D

caravan. yes. preferably with someone who has been there before. just tell me when and where.

I run NGK BKR6E-11's, gapped to .28 . ... oh wait.

Tony Orlando

12th September 2003, 21:21

D'oh!

I run NGK BKR6E-11's, gapped to .28 . That should have read . 028. That'd be one huge gap if it was .28. :D

I drive through Tavares every day on my way to work, so I can lead us there if you like. Where + when do you want to meet up?

PAW467

12th September 2003, 21:59

Umm word to the wise... pack yer lunch.. unless you like the quikie mart special!! :D

Well.. I plan on going. If you want to meet at my house say @7:30ish. Thats cool with me.. Up to ya'll :D

Racer46

12th September 2003, 23:18

I wouldn't mind going a little out of the way for a meet up on Sunday. Maybe someplace close to the 408.

Dream2Race

13th September 2003, 01:27

Packing lunch is no longer necessary! The food van will be there again!

Since most of you are on the west side of town, and the rest of us will be coming from the east side, maybe we could all meet up off 408 maybe around Hiawassee? Sound good? I plan on leaving O-town at 7:30 when I pick up my lady friend from her house. ( :D ) I can lead everyone to the event site from our meeting spot. There's some plaza on the southwest corner of Hiawassee and Hwy 50. Meet there say at 7:45, not a moment later?

Dream2Race

13th September 2003, 01:34

As for the spark plug issue, I'm gonna give this a shot. I may be wrong, so please correct me if I am.

Switching to a colder plug will reduce the plug's heat range, in effect reducing it's maximum heat range. I would think this would create more pinging? Furthermore, I would think you would want to go with a hotter plug for this very reason?

This is just my uneducated understanding. Show me the light! :D

Dream2Race

13th September 2003, 06:37

Well it's 6:30 in the morning and I just got done filling out a police report because some $!%&@!#$& broke into my car this morning. My roommate opened the front door to leave for work just in time to find someone in my car. He saw her and took off. He cut a huge slit in the top to unlock the door. Apparently he'd just gotten inside the car when my roommate caught him because everything was still intact. Thank God her timing was so perfect! The guy was driving a small green CRX or something similar (my roommate doesn't know cars). It had a ridiculous exhaust upgrade because my roomie could hear him turn right onto Lokanatosa from Rouse Road and slow down/speed up for all the speed bumps. What a total idiot. If anyone knows of someone with a car like this please let me know.

This afternoon I'm going shopping for a car alarm. Any suggestions?

Does anyone know a good quality way to sew up the top temporarily?

:( I'm sorry Matt... :(

That is just aweful news, you just got the car not too long ago...

All I have to say is that justice will prevale!!!
What goes around, comes around 3X worst!!!

The alarm I bought is from Wolf Miata (http://www.wolfmiata.com/) .
It is specifically designed and wired to work with Miatas. You can also buy the version that will make your doors keyless entry and keyless trunk...
It took me about 1 whole day to install, test, adjust...

Sorry again for what happend... :(

10AE 2344

13th September 2003, 09:28

*goes outsiide and looks at car*

Damn dude. That blows.

Take everything valuable out of the car and leave the doors unlocked. No cut tops... maybe.

I've always disliked alarms and doubted the effectiveness of one in a Miata. It would have helpd in this case, however. Maybe it's time I install that ignition kill switch that I thought about doing a while back. :( At least they won't be able to get away with the car.

I dunno much about sewing, but maybe some silicone would keep the rain off your head.

<eagle eye>On the lookout for small green beaters with rice boy exhausts.

Neo Masamune

13th September 2003, 10:39

Here's an update on my car.

We got the Falken 512's installed in the rears. I can't wait to get another two to put up front (to replace some really worn out Azenis'). They're a great set of tires, though a bit squirmy because of the softer sidewalls and the fact that they're new. According to the reviews this is fixed within the first 300-500 miles. The Azenis' I thought were okay are actually flatspotted pretty bad and making the same noise that Patrick's wheels and tires were makin' so I can't tell just how quiet the new tires really are (they're supposed to be whisper quality.)

The ticking (scraping noise) from the driver rear wheel is MUCH worse now. Patrick and I think it's the brake. They ARE well worn. I need new pads...anybody have a set of rear OEM pads they're not using right now that I can install on Sunday while ya'll are Autocrossin?

I'm fixing my headlamp shake today, to take away some rattling and squeaking it's causing cause it's missing the grommett to hold the 3rd mounting point in place. Also doing a LONG overdue cleaning of the engine bay.

Dream2Race

13th September 2003, 14:16

Well I was going to have the top replaced by a shop until I found out that I have to pay the $500 deductible. Instead I can save $100 by ordering one from Cabrioworld for $390 and installing myself. Which now I can officially do because we patched the top! With tons of needle & thread and some vinyl racing stripes, Number 2 is leakproof again! I wouldn't quite call it Isabel-proof, but we'll find out early in the week!

Cops dusted for prints and couldn't find any. So basically this fool will run loose.

Ordering Wolf alarm today! :D

So how'z about that meeting spot in the AM? Mark ya goin?

Dream2Race

13th September 2003, 14:21

BTW thanks guys for the patriotism! Who needs OPD? We'll take these fools ourselves!

If only I could've caught them, with my keys in hand! I would've been on their bumper before they could blink! Why couldn't this have happened on a weekend when I'm leaving for Ocala or JAX at 5:30 in the am?!!?! (like every other weekend...go figure!) All I would've wanted is their tag number, and there's no way they could've outrun me! Damn it!

AutoXRacer

13th September 2003, 14:33

Matt, stop thinking about what would have happened if...
I've done that before and if you don't stop you'll go crazy...

Its probably better off that you did not run into him. Who knows, while chasing him something worst could have happened...

Unfortunately criminals will always get away with murder. If our justice system would work, none of this would happen.
Think Singapore.
You think that would have happened there...
Hell, you steal, we take one finger, you steal again, we take your hand...

We should go back to primitive punishement a la Eastern Hemisphere...

Tony Orlando

13th September 2003, 20:14

Man alive, that sucks. Sorry to hear it.

As far as the plugs and heat range issue, going hotter will increase the chance of pinging, not the other way around. The pinging sound can be many things, but they all have one cause: heat.

As written in the glossary of Corky Bell's wonderful book, Supercharged! :

"Knock" is the spontaneous combustion of the air/fuel mixture ahead of the flame front moving through the cylinder. When pressure and temperature exceed that required for controlled combustion, this mixture auto-ignites. The metallic pinging sound is the resulting explosion's shockwave colliding with the cylinder walls. In English: To eliminate knock, remove heat. You can accomplish this many ways, one of the easiest being a colder spark plug or a shorter gap.

Aaron, in your case, you are combining Florida heat with highly advanced timing, hot underhood air drawn into your engine (via the shorty) and a spark plug that was designed to work "okay" in all 48 states.

Dream2Race

13th September 2003, 20:56

And Tony said "Let there be light!" I get it now. :D

Tony Orlando

13th September 2003, 20:58

Bless you, my child.

Neo Masamune

14th September 2003, 09:32

I have extended reach plugs installed now. I just bought some colder "normal reach" plugs that I'll install in this afternoon when I see you all. That combined with moving the filter back to the side of the car that actually has air coming into it should help with the pinging issue. If I'm to reduce the timing advance, I'll have to buy a new crank angle sensor.... :(

Sorry I no make it to come watch autocross...I don't want to drive long distances right now with the car in the shape it's in (I REALLY need a set of frong tires, badly :( ) and I have to take Amanda to work at 11:45. She'll be getting off at 4:30 and we'll head out to whatever we're doing this afternoon ;)

-Neo

Racer46

14th September 2003, 18:47

Aaron, I'll bring a spark plug wrench to Sonic's tomorrow night. Unless they hold me overtime at work I'm planning on being there.

Pete

Neo Masamune

14th September 2003, 21:00

That's okay, bud. I got mine back from Mark today....installed the new plugs. Realized I only had extended reach, SAME temperature (5). On the way home, it didn't ping as readily as it had been under the same lenght of running time, but it DID start acting up just a little bit (like a single tiny knock here and there). I'm going to buy some colder plugs now and get the intake fixed tomorrow.

On the way home from the game (Smokey Bonez, Tampa game tonight....TOTALLY BLEW!) hit I-4, went slightly onto the shoulder causing the car to start swerving a bit. These new tires need their companion fronts because the characteristics of the two aren't balanced properly....plus they're brand spankin' new in the rear, so they're a bit squirmy at higher speeds. Any tiny correction in the wheel makes them rebound the other way a little bit. It's almost sickening to the stomach. Going to have to stick to the side roads under 50 mph till I get the new front ones this weekend. The old Azenis' up front are in horrid shape, with the racket getting even louder now.

I'll say this though, the 512's stick corners like GLUE, with nary a complaint. I can't wait to get the other two and try them in the rain, where they're really supposed to excell.

Oh man, I hate thieves. I have a Viper alarm in my car, with the dual zone radar thingy disconnected. It was just too sensetive (A light breeze's affect on the top would set the alarm off) My car was broken into a while ago, luckily they went in through the window instead of the top. Alarm going off in a busy parking lot must have scared them off, and nothing was stolen.

I'll be sure to keep an eye out for a POS Green hatch/CRX

Thanks for pointing that out Neo. I was thinking the one on University. It would've sucked to show up and be the only Miata there! :(

Well I probably won't make it tonight since it's at the one on 436. It'll be a spontaneous decision when I get off work, which will probably be anywhere from 9 to 9:30. If I go, Stephanie might show up in her Miata too. :D

If that bike meet IS tonight, after all, there will be absolutely no room to park there for us....and I can half guarantee that we wouldn't be welcome there, either. Unless I can spot a friend or two in the group, but even then I can't say the other 40-60+ bikes are going to like the presence of Miatas in their regular spot. This car's not well-liked by the mainstream public (or other enthusiasts crowds).

Should you see signs of the bikes, I'd say just head down University to the Goldenrod Sonics automatically.

Ya, so I get my front tires installed today after work, thinking it'll stop the nasty flat spotty noise from the ancient Azenis' that I had up front.

Nope.

Nasty noise still there, so I go what I think the source is, the Drivers side rear tire (I was thinking the sound was just reverberating through the cabin beforehand, and only SOUNDING like it was coming from the rear instead of the front). I pull the rim off and inspect.

The outside brake pad's got life left.

Then I crane my neck around to the back, and what do I see? My inside pad is TOAST. The metal plate "bracket" that sits on the pad is rubbing the inside of the rotor, from what I can tell (not on the important part of the rotor, I felt for a groove to make sure). So here I thought by looking through the wheel spokes that I had at least a little life left in the pads, and lo and behold, I don't.

I need some help tomorrow afternoon, somebody with a little space and some tools to change out the pads. Important things are a C Clamp, a little wood block, and wrench to get the calipers off. Can anybody assist?

Yea, I have a feeling that it may be about to go. But it's still working (tested ebrake, regular brake and it's grabbing on both sides. No need for new caliper....pads were wearing evenly....no, it was the fact that they were so worn that made them look like they weren't, and they were actually seated a little loose in there....hence the rattling, scraping, etc. The car's at Meinike right now, getting worked on....I tried doing it myself, and couldn't get the cylinder to compress, with all my might. They only charge $65 for rear brake service when you provide the parts (it's 90-something with their parts, etc...).

-Neo

Bob

17th September 2003, 14:51

Lucky you didn't pop a blood vessel! The rear caliper pistons retract with a set allen screw in the rear and not by compression as the fronts do.

So you paid someone $65 bucks and you brought parts to do a 15 minute job? Gee we did it for free at the last club meeting! :)

I hope that shop knows what they are doing or you'll be buying a caliper!

Neo Masamune

17th September 2003, 15:47

Yep, they did....I made sure of it after reading what I was doing wrong right after I dropped the car off. :(

So the rear brakes are done now, grand total $95 (they cut me a little deal at the shop). I came away with new rear break pads, my fingers intact, a new tool kit and a C Clamp, plus a little leftover brake fluid and a new bleeder kit.

I remembered everything except for the fact the rear pistons get adjusted differently. ARGH.

Well all is well now.

BUT:

THE NOISE IS STILL THERE. It's still ticking from that drivers side rear tire, and it's still makeing that "flat spotted" tire tread-like noise!!!!

I'm thinking it's either: Bad wheel bearings
-Bad rear CV.
-Bad rear Differential.

UGH.

I need somebody experienced with this to drive my car or ride in it with me to listen.

Don't be surprised when you hear my wheel bearing noise over my exhaust note tonight. It's getting pretty bad now.

Well, according to Martin, if you drive a Miata you class in DS, DP, or BR. Tony classifies to be in BR or SM since he is supercharged.

I think Martin needs to work a little on their classifications. Why don't they just class like SCCA, but with separate classes for race tires...

CSP (street tires) and CSPR (Race tires)...?

DS (Stock) DSR (Stock race tire)
DP (street prepared street tires)
DPR (" " race tires)
etc...

Anyways  , I like being in DP since you're all in there and it makes competition interesting. Everyone clocks in a very similar time...

Neo, that wheel hub sounds kind of cheap. When mine got replaced it cost $90 something...

Sorry Tony. :(

Won't be making it to this Mondays meet again, got Sunday off for Noel's B-day. So now I got to pay for it by working a double on Monday...

How many of you will make it to next Sundays AutoX at Valencia...? ;) :D

Not replacing whole hub assembly...just the rear bearing. Dan's got tools to press out the old bearing and press in the new one, so no need to purchase the entire assembly. Saves money.

Basically it works out like this: if you have a bone-stock car on street tires, you get screwed at SCCA cuz you run against guys on race tires. If you have a bone-stock car on race tires, you get screwed at MSCC cuz you run against guys on race tires with mods also. Give a little, take a little. We can't have our cake and eat it too. :D

Speaking of autocrossing, you guys missed a seriously cool autocross today! MSCC held a members-only event at Lake County and ONLY 15 DRIVERS SHOWED UP!!!!! It was sweet! I ran a whopping 20 runs, and I only stopped because I corded one of my race tires! Plus 3 other people did runs in my car, 5 between them. So my car and race tires saw a total of 25 runs today! It was great! And the funny thing was as I was changing my tires, one of the studs on the left front was cross-threaded. If I had removed the lug, I wouldn't have been able to put it back on, therefore I would not have been allowed to run my car. So I was forced to leave the street tire on! So my front left was a street tire while the rest were race tires! It was hilarious! :D

Replied to your post in Tires forum, Gerald. You probably had one of the fronts replaced. If you bought the whole assembly for 100, that's a good price. They usually run about 130. For the rears, if it's just the bearing going bad, you just need to replace the bearing, not the entire assembly.

Yes, Underworld was good. Pretty cool story, nice effects, but most importantly, Kate Beckinsale spent the entire movie in skin tight black leather.

Mmmmmm.....undead hottie.

On a more car related note, I've had a strange "feeling" in my gas pedal the last few days, sort of a distant clunking or clicking while cruising. I was just starting to get concerned about it today until I went over a little bump, heard a loud " ping!", and now it's gone.

 Beats me.

I'm ready to kill somebody! Who do I wanna kill? The schmo who slashed my top! This has turned out to be a freakin nightmare! Caution: this is gonna be a long rant!

It took me 3 hours just install ONE power lock actuator and the associated components to get it working. Yes, 3 hours! The big hold up was this: some Miatas come equipped with a connector inside the door for a power lock actuator harness. Am I fortunate enough to have one of those? Of course not! So I had to route an extra harness thru the door (the ez part) and run it into the connector that goes into the door jam and thru the footwell. This was what I needed help for! Initially I had no idea where this connector was. I was stumped. So I resorted to the trusty Miata.net Garage, where I found exactly what I needed! Undoing this connector, however, was a pain in the @$$. The gap between the door and the door jam is hardly enough to fit your fingers into. I had to push the wires from inside the footwell, while prying the connector out from the outside. Eventually (and I mean after a while) I got it out and hooked up the harness. Getting the connector back in was easy...it was fitting the rubber boot back over it that took another 20 minutes! Argh! With a flathead and some needle nose plyers I managed to do a half@$$ job and eventually I just gave up. So finally I got all the keyless entry components in and came to Test 1: test operation of keyless system. It's not working. So I went back thru everything to make sure I did everything right and didn't miss a step. After blood, sweat, and tears, I remembered that I had disconnected the battery! Hahaha! For the record, I'm an idiot!

To make a long story short (mwwooohahaha), that's as far as I got before daylight ran out. So the alarm is not hooked up yet, nor is the passenger side PL actuator.

And I still hafta install a new top.

BUT GOOD NEWS!! (Hope you've made it this far) My roommate saw the schmo who broke into my car....again!! She saw him on Alafaya so she chased him and got his tag number! When he recognized her car, he bolted and began weaving thru traffic. She caught up to him and pulled along side, and he pulled his hat over his face. Can we say guilty? This sucker's goin down!

Oh. We got my wheel bearing installed yesterday afternoon, pretty much without a hitch....getting the old bearing off the hub proved to be a bit difficult at first, but we made a trip for a splitter and a couple other tools, and it came off fine.

The car is feeling like new again....with everything done now, it drives silky smooth at any speed. I LOVE it. The Falken Ziex 512's are living up to their reviews (www.1010tires.com) in all ways described. No more clicky clicky or howl howl or grind grind from the drivers rear wheel from the bad bearing. I'll bring the bad race in tonight to show you all just how damaged it got. It was gauling REAL bad. I maybe had a couple days left on it before it would have been completely gone (grease inside had baked and seperated....alot of it had leaked out already. )

Now two things left to do....fix these damned headlights (probably just buy new French ;) ones.) And get rid of this infernal pinging at 30 minutes of driving...

What kind of trouble are you having with the install?

Neo Masamune

22nd September 2003, 12:18

Matt....well it seems that the drivers side rear bearing tends to go out on ALOT of Miatas come 65,000-100,000 miles. It has something to do with weight, as when you're driving the car alone, that wheel (hub, axle, whatever...) bears the brunt of the extra weight. So in hard driving, such as road race or Autocrossing, it stresses it more causing the seal to rupture, or the bearing to overheat, which makes it loose the all important grease inside. Then the damage begins when the bearings start gualing the race....

-Neo ++ Out of curiosity, where's the "lots" coming from Neo? I've been reading the Miata List and Forum for years and don't think I've seen it mentioned 20 times as a problem, if that. Just curious? As for load in performance driving, it's seems much more logical that the front vs the rear would be the ones to go as that's where asymeticial loading is going to occur most often in turns under braking, etc. I'll be changing the front bearings on my merlot as soon as I can figure how to get the "hub cap" off...the puller I have does not fit. Maybe someone can offer suggestions at Saturday's meet?

What did you use to get the lock nut off the rear hub, Neo? What did you retorque it to? Did you change the bearing on both sides or just one?

Thanks!

Just a single bearing was bad, so I just changed that one side. Hoping the other side doesn't go bad anytime soon....but if it does, well I know what to do/where to go. The rears are usually torqued to about 150ft/lbs. + or - some. It's a fairly wide range. Dan Deorn would be the man to get advice from on those front hubs, he knows his stuff quite well.

Er...the "lots" really isn't THAT much, but it's enough repetative posts about it and similar that I've found doing searches in the NB and the Tires and Wheels forums. Seems the most common one to go is the drivers side rear bearing.

ref rear hub nut torque, it's 159-215 foot pounds for an M1 to preload the the wheel bearings correctly. I'd guess the M2 is close to the same. 150 may be on the low end, Neo?

To mount the siren of the alarm, the instructions say to use the factory-fitted stud that's located on the driver's side "shock tower". This stud is slightly too large to fit through the hole in the siren mount. Did you drill the hole to enlarge it? How did you mount the other side of the siren mount? Also, this alarm came with absolutely no hardware for this (washers, nuts, etc.)

Matt, I installed mine on the driver side by the strut tower. Right next to the clutch cylinder (between the clutch cylinder and strut tower)...
I used a stud that was protruding. I did not have any problems.

I am actually thinking to move the siren to the mouth of the bumper (since I have a grill). I was planning to extend the wiring to accomodate this. The reason for this is to make the siren louder, being in the engine compartment, the siren tends to be isolated; hence have to point it towards the ground...

25th September 2003, 02:29

For some reason that same stud on my car is too large for the existing hole in the siren mount. Tomorrow I'm borrowing a drill to enlarge the hole, and also drill a hole in the body work to mount the other hole. I didn't realize that stubby little M6 bolt is for the siren mount. So there IS hardware! Got ahead of myself there!

The problem now is this: I can't get the right side turn signal to work with the alarm. The signal is operating fully, just not with the alarm the way it's supposed to. Only the left side turn signal flashes when activating/deactivating the alarm. I did everything: I swapped the connectors (white harness wires that connect to turn signal wires) and the problem is still the right side; I crimped the T-clamp as tight as I could to make sure it spliced thru the wire insulation; I even CUT away the insulation to fully expose the wire where the T-clamp bites...still no dice. I picked up a current tester and I'll take a look at it next Monday when I get back from Boston. I'm thinking maybe a wire on the harness is bad? What do you guys think?

As you all can tell, this type of task is not my forte. I'm just a driver!

I didn't realize how crappy my broken RB muffler made my car sound until I got the new one installed. Wow. It sounds nice and smooth again, not so raspy. I guess it was partially the metal/metal contact from the cracked weld, combined with the fact that the old one had about 25K miles on it. After much careful engineering, bloodshed, and toil, I finally finished the heat shield for my intake. It's monsterflow-style in that it's open on the top. I found some cool foam edging like what comes with the monsterflow heat shield, so it seals well against the hood when shut. I test drove it to the gas station and back and the intake noise seems unchanged. No impressions on effectiveness yet. Of course it's made from the same carbon fiber as the splitter I made. I also made a radiator cover plate with my last piece of carbon fabric. I spent a lot of time sanding both these pieces down, so they are nice and shiny. They look much better than the splitter. I'm proud of the heat shield. It looks rad! :D I think when I take the splitter off to properly mount it, I'll add some more resin and get the finish up to par with the rest of the stuff.

Straight trippin dogg!

I missed ALL the racing action this weekend...from the USGP to the ALMS/CART races in Miami (that track sux anyway) to Tony's apparent cone molestation at VCC! Oh well. No regrets...I had fun in Beantown.

Tony, I guess nobody taught you the basics of autocrossing: "Go that way, really fast. If something gets in your way.....turn." :D

Me now showey again tonight.

Peace out. Keepin it real.
